Christmas Bauble Tutorial
1. Create a new image, 400x400 pixels, with a transparent background. Choose the Selection tool & draw an antialiased circle selection in the centre of your canvas.
Alpha Channel 2. Select black as your background colour and white as your foreground colour. Select the Flood Fill & choose Sunburst Gradient. In the second tab option choose the Foreground- Background gradient and make Horizontal 75 and Vertical35. Flood fill your selection. Go to Selections/Save to Alpha Channel... and press the Ok button, then on the next box that comes up type in "Bauble Selection" and press Ok again. Keep the circle selected.
Colorised bauble 3. Go to Colors/Colorize... and fiddle with the sliders until you find a colour you like for your globe. For this tutorial, I have chosen Hue 170 Saturation 60.
Line Tool 4. Create a new layer and name it "Bauble Decoration". Set your foreground colour to grey and select the line tool. In the Tool Options - Draw palette, under Type choose Freehand Line, Style choose Stroked & make the Width about 3. Make sure Antialias is checked & that Create as vector and Close path are not checked. Under the second tab of the tool options dialogue box, make Curve Tracking 1 and choose the middle option for both Cap and Join
Squiggles with the line tool 5. This bit's fun. Draw patterns all over your globe, sqiggles, circles, stars - it's up to you. Alternativly, you could use the Shapes tool, set to Stroked with a width of about 4 to create stars and other shapes.
Squiggles with the line tool 6. Select the Selection tool and click on one of the shapes you have drawn. You will see that all the shapes become selected. You could also have used the Magic Wand to the same effect, but I find that this way makes a cleaner selection. We want these shapes to look a bit glittery, so go to Image/Noise/Add.... Move the slider to 50% and select Random. Next go to Image/Other/Emboss. I know it looks a bit of a mess at the moment, but it will improve :o)
Making it Metal 7. Go to Image/Effects/Inner Bevel... and select the Metallic preset. If you like, increase the shininess setting. So we now have metallic decorations, we just need to colourise them to get rid of the multi-coloured noise. Go to Colors/Colorize... and move the sliders until you have a colour you like. For this tutorial, I wanted gold metal, so I chose Hue 30 Saturation 150. Press CTRL+D to de-select the decorations.
Completed Bauble 8. Go to Selections/Load from Alpha Channel and you should find that your "Bauble Selection" is highlighted. Click on Ok to load the selection. Now go to Image/Deformations/Punch... and move the slider along to 40% and ok it. Chose the Selection tool again and click on one of the decorations to highlight them all. Go to Image/Effects/Drop Shadow... - make the Color black, Opacity60, Blur10 and Horizontal and Vertical both 0 and apply. Load the circular selection once again from the Alpha Channel, then go to Selections/Invert and press Delete to remove any stray drop shadow from around the edge of your bauble.
Your Bauble is almost complete. Click on the link below to go to page 2 where we shall make the hook for the decoration.
