Bonsai Tutorial
This tutorial was inspired from a tutorial by Eagle Feather. He has some fantastic tutorials, check them out!
File/New 1. Create a New Image, 400x400 pixels with a transparent background.
Airbrush 2. Set your foreground colour to a medium brown - I used #86633A. Click on the Airbrush Tool. Make the settings as shown.
Tool Options Palette 3. On your canvas, drawn the trunk and main branches of your tree.
Retouch Tool Options Palette 4. Select the Retouch tool. Make the settings the same as shown. Under the second tab of the Tool Options palette, set the Retouch Mode to Smudge. Make sure Paper Texture is set to None.

Smudging the branches 5. On the canvas, smudge the main branches outwards to make secondary branches. Change the Size of the Retouch tool to 15 and make some smaller branches. Continue this process, decreasing the Size to 10, until your tree is suitably "branchy".
6. Click on the Seletion Tool. In the Tool Options palette, make Selection Type Rectangle, Feather 0 and Antialias ticked. Draw a rectangle around your tree, then click anywhere within that rectangle - your tree will now be selected. .
Tree with Inner Bevel applied 7.Go to Image/Effects/Inner Bevel. Select the Pillow preset and change the Depth to 10. Apply the preset. Don't drop the selection.
8. Go to Image/Effects/Texture an use the settings as shown below. I used the texture Tree Bark texture - it is number 56 on my list and I used #CCC6B4 for the light - play around with the light colours to see what you like best.
Texture Settings
Textured Tree The basic tree is now finished. Go on the next page to make some leaves for your tree.
